Holiday season is upon us, and for a lot of us that means travel, by plane or train or bus or automobile. Podcasts can help make the travel time go much faster. My brother Jake and I drove six hours last weekend, and the time flew by listening to some excellent Invisibilia episodes.
Here are some suggestions for your travels, the best of what I've been listening to lately. (Some of these podcasts deal with themes not appropriate for children).
"The Big Man Can't Shoot" -- Revisionist History
Revisionist History is author Malcolm Gladwell's podcast, and it's amazing. This episode explains why all basketball players should shoot free throws underhand, and why no one does.
"How to Become Batman" -- Invisibilia
Invisibilia is a mind-blowing podcast about "the invisible forces that shape human nature." This episode is about how expectations shape us. Did you know that blind people can ride bikes? They can.
"The Personality Myth" -- Invisibilia
Do you have a stable personality? Do the people you love? What does it mean if they don't? (This one freaked me out a little bit). Also, all the other episodes are amazing. This is also true for Revisionist History. Just listen to them all.
"Tell Me I'm Fat" -- This American Life
How should we talk about being fat? How should we think about it? This episode has some good ideas, while dispelling common misconceptions. The whole thing is amazing, but Act 2 DESTROYED me.
"The Problem We All Live With" -- This American Life
This episode explores school segregation in modern day America. I had no idea this was such a major problem, and how many other problems could be fixed by just integrating our schools. This is both fascinating and terribly important.
If you're looking for something more lighthearted for you travels, and don't mind profanity, I highly recommend the McElroy family of podcasts. Right now I'm really into Sawbones, My Brother, My Brother and Me is always fun, and if you are going on a super long road trip, nothing can beat The Adventure Zone. That's how Andy and I successfully drove across America with our morale intact.
I'm always in the market for new podcasts/especially great episodes. What have you been listening to lately?
