I love a good romantic comedy. I love watching two people overcome all obstacles and fall in love in the midst of hilarious situations (who doesn’t?). Recently I realized that while I enjoy watching the couple, I will love a movie even more if there is a family involved. Maybe that’s because the characters are more fleshed out when you know their families, or maybe it’s because I love my family so much, but whatever the reason, families take romantic comedies to the next level.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite romantic comedies (very broadly defined) that are wonderful especially because of the caring, zany, and beautiful families involved.
1. While You Were Sleeping
This is a movie about two people falling in love, but it’s also a movie about a woman who goes from being all alone to becoming “a fiancee, a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, and a friend.”
You also get to enjoy spending time with these crazy people, who have absolutely scintillating dinner conversations:
"These mashed potatoes are so creamy.”
Also, this is apropos of absolutely nothing, but I found this incredible gif:
2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (obviously)
Of course this movie is on this list, because it is about how Toula falls in love, but it is more about how she handles her big fat Greek family. You never know what they are going to do next. This movie also feature scintillating conversation, courtesy of Aunt Voula.
"Yes, inside the lump, was my twin.”
3. About Time
In this movie boy meets girl, boy uses time traveling ability to win girl, boy and girl love each other and live their beautiful lives. Usually romantic comedies end when a couple gets married, but this movie goes further, onto children and everyday life. It also focuses a lot on the boy’s relationship with his father, because he inherits his time-traveling abilities from hisd ad. Even if a movie with time travel doesn’t automatically appeal to you, you should definitely watch this one. It’s one of the most beautiful family relationships I’ve ever seen captured on film. (This one is rated R though, so there is also language and sex.)
4. Father of the Bride Part 1 and 2
OK, so these movies aren’t truly romantic comedies (it’s not about Annie and Brian falling in love, it’s about how George Banks handles it, so I guess it’s just a regular comedy) but there is a wedding and an amazing family and these movies are just too wonderful. The love that George and Nina and the kids have for each other is wonderful. The love the Franck and George eventually have for each other is also wonderful. It’s all just so great.
“I’m removing the superfluous buns.”
5. Sense and Sensibility
It might not technically be a romantic comedy, although it is a romance, and I do think it’s very funny. I love watching Elinor’s interactions with her mother and sisters, and I love watching Edward get to know them all, especially Margaret. Elinor loves it, too.
This movie just came out, and it is amazing. It’s about more than two people falling in love, but it is an incredibly adorable falling in love story. The families play major roles and keep things funny and dramatic. I don’t want to say a lot more for fear of spoilers, but if you like the other movies on this list, go and Redbox this movie today.
What romantic comedies (broadly defined) with families do you love? I’m always on the lookout for more!
