This week I saw this video on facebook, of a crazed Mom getting her house ready for company.
My favorite part is: "There can be no signs of living in this house!" I love it because it's hilarious and also I feel that exact way! When I'm cleaning for company, I feel like I have to erase all evidence of our existence, which is really weird, when you think about it.
So I thought about writing a blog post about how strange that impulse is, or why we're afraid of letting people know we sit, or why lots of women, but not as many men, are socialized to feel this way. And all of that analysis could be really good and helpful.
But then I thought, no. Not today. I'm not feeling like deep analysis. This video is great all on its own. And it's going to help me fight my weird perfectionistic tendencies, not with analysis, but with quotes. When I showed this to Mary she said, "I think I just need to watch this before I clean for company, haha." And we will! When you hear us yelling, "Get rid of the couches, we can't let people know we sit!" you will know that we have people coming over. And we are learning to R-E-L-A-X about it. Or at least laugh about it.
