This is a public service announcement that I needed today. Maybe you do, too.
In case you’ve forgotten, you are still valuable and worthy of love even if:
You didn’t finish your to-do list today.
You didn’t do something as well as you could have.
You messed up, big-time.
You aren’t living your best life now.
You never end up living up to your potential.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I finally got my copy of Shauna Niequist’s Present Over Perfect from the library today, which, as far as I can tell, talks about this exact subject; I feel inspired already by Glennon Doyle Melton’s quote on the back that says that the book “invited me to remember that my worthiness, belonging, and beloved-ness are birthrights.” I like to think of this as a variation on approaching life from an abundance mindset, not a scarcity mindset, which Anna just wrote about. You don’t need to do any of the things on the list to have value and deserve love. You already have value and deserve love, and if you know that, it’s much easier to actually accomplish things than when you do them out of desperation to prove yourself.
As our pastor says each week for the commissioning at the end of the service:
You have dignity in your being,
you who bear God’s image and were bought with His own blood;
and you have significance in your doing,
you who are commissioned by God
to steward His Creation
and to make disciples for Him as you go.
So, no matter what, we still have value. Thanks be to God.
